Winter has slowed or made my exercise non-existent, so today with the sun shining, Neddie and I went for a stroll, trying to take notice of the little details through the lens of my camera.

1.5 cups of self-raising flour
1 cup plain greek yoghurt

That is it!

Mix in a bowl, turn onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes.

The recipe is from here

The first time I made this recipe I found the base too thick, so the second time I made it, I halved the recipe and it made a delicious thin base. Definitely recommend.

I am starting to feel inspired once again. I am excited to try growing my own herbs, vegetables, and fruit. I have 9 fruit trees that are about 8 years old. I am hoping to give them a lot of love this summer and see if they will give me fruit. Water and protection from the birds seems to be the secret, I'm guessing. Although our summers can be so hot that it burns the trees.

Some photos from pottering in the garden today.
I/m not feeling well, which is my bodies way of telling me to stop and rest. Today I spent time in the garden, sitting watching the ducks swimming in their pond, the chooks scratching and my cats exploring the mini orchard. The orchard looks dead at this time of the year, but I managed to find a few bits of colour in other spots of the garden.

I had a pair of denim jeans that were really comfy, but had started to develop holes between the legs, so I thought I would try making a denim skirt out of them.

I started unpicking the inner legs, then accidentally started unpicking the outside leg (fixed that with the sewing machine), once the legs were unpicked, I started googling for tips and found this fantastic video.

I followed all her tips and found the skirt quickly came together. I double stitched all the seams and left the bottom of the skirt unhemmed for the frayed look.

I am happy with my first effort at making a recycled denim skirt.

I have a love/hate relationship with technology. I love the way it makes so many things easier, but I don't like how much I have gotten to relying on it. So when I was sitting next to someone at work who was telling me how much he loved his fitbit (another brand of activity tracker) I wasn't really interested. However the more he talked about it the more I started to think about it. Did I really want another piece of technology in my life and did I need it? I am also aware of the impact on the earth each new purchase we make has.

I started researching with two criteria; it had to have the time and the steps on the actual band. I didn't want to be syncing it all the time. I came across the Garmin Vivofit and the things I liked about it are:

It is waterproof to 50m and I have tested this at the beach and in the shower

It has the time and date on it, incredibly handy

It has a 1 year watch battery, so once you put it on, you don't have to take it off to charge every few days

The whole reason for it, it displays how many steps I have done on the band.

I didn't know if it would motivate me to move more, but it really does. I am finding that I have gotten into the habit of going for a walk morning and night to make sure I get between 10,000 - 15,000 steps a day. The recommendation is a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.

Weekends I really have to make an effort to move otherwise I find I may only get 5,000 steps.

The other reason why I keep it on all the time, is it records how much you move in your sleep and how many hours sleep you are getting. I assume the less you move the deeper you are sleeping. This is just a nice little bonus, but not the reason I bought it.

Would I recommend it? It depends on a few things. Are you already really active? Do you already have a watch? Then no I probably wouldn't think it would be a benefit, but if you really feel like you need a push to move more, then definitely give it a try. Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12057429568641284737noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4966852678763261789.post-91852172397127264582015-01-02T16:42:00.000+10:302015-01-02T16:42:16.865+10:30DIY Outdoor ShowerIt is around 43 degrees Celsius today in South Australia, so for fun decided to make a cheap outdoor cold shower to cool down. A not so quick trip to the local town for lunch with my sister and a look around for outdoor showers, but no one had them. I was looking for something like this that connects to the garden hose.

So we looked at outdoor garden nozzles instead and my sister pointed out a simple brass adjustable hose nozzle. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to make it work at home, but I worked it out quickly.

Hose thrown over a tree, hoses connected for stability with a bungee cord and it was completed. Threw a strong coat hanger over another branch to hang a towel on, but on a day like today, you dry very quickly.

Tested it out on a almost mist setting and it is perfect and very refreshing!

It was $16 all up for the brass adjustable nozzle and the brass piece that connects to the hose, but I imagine you could do cheaper with plastic. Plus I can use it in the garden as well :) Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12057429568641284737noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4966852678763261789.post-70643475722069144762015-01-02T09:00:00.000+10:302015-01-02T09:00:00.063+10:30'tis the season for baby chicksI keep kicking the chooks off their nests as they go broody as I really don't need any more chooks or roosters, but they are persistent and keep finding new spots. I have left these last two chooks to be and hope no predators get them during the night. Also see if they last the 21 days required for the eggs to hatch.
I also have four little chicks and today is the first time I decided to let them free range and hope for the best e.g. lost, drowning, escaping, predators etc. As soon as I let them out the mama chook left them on their own and they haven't ventured far from the safety of their coop all day.

Take 1, really didn't work very well for them, so they rebuilt in the other corner.

It isn't a very good photo as I didn't want to get too close to Mum/Dad and scare them off as there are little baby birds in the nest now. You can't see them in this photo, but I have seen their hungry mouths popping up out of the nest. Also that is probably why Mum/Dad are sitting in this weird spot as there is no room in the nest and it is a stinking hot day here, so wouldn't want to sit on the babies - 36 degrees Celsius.

Not sure what will happen now, will they fall out of the nest when they get bigger? I will need to keep an eye on them, so I don't run over them and the chooks, roosters and ducks don't attack them.

Last night I decided to give it a go making a pattern out of one of my own shoulder bags.

Starting to cut out the pattern using brown paper using existing bag

I made a pattern using brown paper, cut out 4 pieces from my fabric (bag with liner as the fabric on the wrong side wasn't a very good surface) and pinned it together to see how it would work as a bag and found I didn't like it.

I found it was a lot of trial and error to work out how to make my first bag. I cut the handles off, so I could reposition them, plus made them the same width, rather than tapered. Then found I didn't like the bottom of the bag curved, so I sewed a straight bottom into it and cut off the excess fabric.

The trickiest part was getting my head around sewing the straps, liner and bag all together so it came out the right way at the end. A quick google and I was on the right track, but needed to make a hole in the bottom of the liner so I could pull the whole bag through once I'd finished sewing it together.

I'm very happy with the finished result as below, just need to find something to keep the bag closed and sew the hole at the bottom of the liner. 4-5 hours and $8 for the fabric.

Finished product, minus something to keep the bag closed.

How time really does fly. I kept thinking about posting an update, but never got here. I have gone through my camera for photos I was going to post, but nothing relevant now, except for this photo of a spider and egg I found in my grass 12 October 2013.
I am planning on taking a few photos around the place to compare to the photos when I first moved in. It will help remind how much I have actually done.Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12057429568641284737noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4966852678763261789.post-53273514291442369582013-09-29T20:19:00.000+09:302013-09-29T20:19:19.538+09:30Springtime!

It's been 7 months since my last update, how time flies... Over the last couple of months the front garden has had a makeover!

Before the cardboard was held down with bricks and pallets to stop the weeds growing, but quite an eyesore.

A couple of months later and the peas are growing well, there are also about twenty native tubestock plants in there growing. See is you can spot them!

Here is the front yard fully dressed or nice and warm as suggested by a passerby.

I spread it very thickly with the hope of smothering the weeds and the grass. I'm hope to pick up another 10 native tubestock, including a quandong seedling tomorrow from State Flora. I put my name on the waiting list over 12 months ago for a quandong seedling and got a call this week letting me know that they are in stock.

State Flora are fantastic if you are wanting to grow native plants, black tubes are $2.95 and green tubes $4.95. Last weekend I went in with a couple of pieces of tree I wanted and the gentlemen assisted me to find matches as well as helping me to select a further thirteen shrubs (1-2m high) that grow well in my climate with minimal water. Definitely recommend!

Dad kindly bought me this huge roll of pea straw for my fruit trees... It's only just coming to the end of spring and everything is so dry and dead. The pea straw will help to keep the moisture in the ground.

I can guarantee once the chooks and ducks are let out, the pea straw will no longer look like this!

I had 6 fertile eggs, 1 egg disappeared, 1 died during hatching, 1 died overnight from a strange growth and 1 sadly drowned. The remaining 2 are fighting fit. I have only let them out a couple of times and the last time I was chasing one of them around and around the chicken coop trying to get it to go in, whilst not allowing the mum and the other baby chook out.

I also have one limping little chook, my little brown chook started limping last Sunday morning and after no improvement by Thursday, I took her to the vet, where I was given medication to give her orally for 5 days. Sadly no improvement yet, with 2 days of medication to go.

I had to quickly fox proof this aviary, so that I could separate Hilda from the other chooks, otherwise the unbroody chooks keep laying in with her and the fresh eggs and fertile eggs all get mixed up. Also once the baby chickens hatch the other chooks can attack the babies I have heard.

It was remarkably easy to install, the hardest part was sewing the zip into the netting, trying to push the thick needle through the zipper material and then looping through the netting, but once I got the hang of it I was fine.
My fabulous brother created this entry/exit point for the cats using the existing toilet window screen, which I picked up today and it looks fantastic. The cats now need to learn how to use the door. They are very unsure, but it won't be long and they will be racing in and out.
You can create your own starter following the instructions here, which is how I got mine, get a sourdough starter from friends or family or buy from the many online stores that sell sourdough starter. If you do want some let me know and I'll see if I can post it to you if you provide postage.

Once you have your sourdough starter you need to feed it so that you have enough starter to make your loaf of bread.

The simplest way I have found is to measure all of the starter sourdough, say it weighs 200g, you then add 200g of flour (wholemeal I use) and 200g water and stir it well, adding in lots of air, then put into a glass jar or plastic container (make sure the lid doesn't screw on as the starter ferments and builds up gases and these need to be able to escape, I use a moccona jar and the lid just pops up as needed) and leave on the bench until you see lots of bubbles in it like the picture below. It is then ready to cook with.

I have only made 5 loaves of sourdough bread so I am still learning, but the quantities I am using to make my bread are below as suggested by Dave from Aussies Living Simply.

To make 2 loaves of bread
400g starter
800g bakers flour
650g water
20g salt

Mix into a dough and then knead until smooth and elastic, the first few times it took me a long time, but the last time I set the timer for 20 mins and found this was plenty of time to knead.

Divide the dough in half, shape and put in loaf tins, cover with a tea towel and leave to rise between 4-12 hours depending on the temperature. I have been leaving mine to rise overnight, then baking in the morning.

Ready to go in the oven

Heat oven as high as it will go, slash tops of loaves and put into oven for 5 mins.

Then bring the temperature down to 220 degrees and bake for another 20-25mins.

Cool and eat.

I then slice and freeze my loaves in freezer bags. I find it easy to get out a couple of slices as required.

When you aren't using your sourdough starter you can leave it in the fridge to hibernate until you are ready to use it again. I have also heard that you can freeze your starter as a safety in case anything goes wrong with your starter, but I haven't tried this yet.

This website here has so much information on making sourdough bread, that all your questions will be answered. There are also recipes for using excess sourdough starter to make pancakes and choc chip cookies, which I have made and can confirm are delicious!

Lets just start by saying I am in love with my new pressure cooker. I picked it up Friday night after work and since then I have used it seven times and it is only Sunday night.

I had never seen a pressure cooker in use and I had only heard horror stories of exploding pressure cookers, so I have been kind of scared of them. Fortunately people kept mentioning how great they are for cooking legumes and beans, so I posted on a forum asking for feedback from people with first hand experience, and I received a positive response from pressure cooker owners. I was sold!

I decided to buy an electric pressure cooker because I felt safer and decided on the Tefal for several reasons:

It has a browning, saute and simmer function, so I am able to brown my onion and garlic in butter or oil before throwing everything else in and getting it up to pressure.

It is almost fully automatic. I throw everything into the pan, select either low or high pressure, select how long I want it to be at pressure, then hit start and I can walk away (I don't recommend leaving appliances going when you aren't around to supervise), read a book, wash dishes etc, whilst the pressure cooker gets to pressure, cooks at pressure and once the time is over it beeps and you can either let it release the pressure naturally or open the vent and release the steam quickly.

It is also incredibly easy to clean, the lid is completely washable (pulls apart easily) and the pot is removable and washes easily.

I don't know what stovetop models are like or other brands of electric pressure cookers as this is my first experience with pressure cookers, so can only share my experiences.

I am still learning what the pressure cooker can do, but so far it hasn't disappointed with anything I have cooked in it and I have had no idea how to use it. I have just been googling for rough estimates of times and whether to use high or low pressure and whether to release the steam or wait for it to release naturally.

I have cooked a potato and chick pea curry, steel cut oats, pumpkin soup, potatoes to make mashed potato, brown rice (I have never had such creamy tasty brown rice) and pumpkin and chick pea curry, but forgot to include the curry, so ended up being a coconut flavour from the coconut milk and again tasted fantastic! I wish I could share how wonderfully everything really does taste!

I now have 20 lunches in the freezer to take to work, so much easier than last time I cooked my meals for the freezer. I am very soon going to have to get a chest freezer just to store everything I am planning to cook. I have dry chickpeas soaking, ready to cook tomorrow night and freeze.

I have also found a recipe to make bread in the pressure cooker and instructions on boiling fresh eggs in it, apparently it makes fresh eggs easier to peel. I have so many recipes I want to try...

I have heard that things taste better because it is cooked under pressure you aren't losing any of the flavour, I'm not sure, but I do know everything does taste good, really good!

I thought I would share a couple of recipes

Brown Rice - recipe from here, which I modified slightly
4 cups of water
2 cups of brown rice
3 teaspoons of powdered vegetable stock
3 tablespoons of butter

Throw everything into the pressure cooker, set the pressure cooker to high and cook for 15 mins at pressure. Allow pressure cooker to release the pressure naturally.

This will be the best brown rice you have ever tasted!

Pumpkin and Chickpea Curry
1 onion diced
3-4 cloves of garlic
butter
Pumpkin cut into bite size pieces
2 cans of chick peas drained
1 can of coconut cream
2 cups of water

1 - Melt butter in the pressure cooker using the browning option, add the onion and garlic and cook until soft
2 - Throw in the rest of the ingredients
3 - Select high pressure and cook at high pressure for 3-4 mins (I cooked for 4 mins and it probably cooked it too much)
4 - Once it beeps, release the steam using the valve
Dinner served in about 30 mins. The longest part is preparing the vegetables. The pressure cooker takes about 8-10 mins to get to pressure (quicker if it is already warm), then 3-4 mins at pressure. Really very quick!

I will admit that I always jump when I release the steam valve, but I imagine I will stop jumping once I get used to the noise it makes as it rushes out!

I have never had this much fun in the kitchen. Any questions please feel free to ask in the comments field.Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12057429568641284737noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4966852678763261789.post-65300766382227911462012-08-01T10:58:00.003+09:302012-08-05T20:25:27.333+09:30Water KefirI am very grateful to have been given water kefir grains from a friend at the last Aussies Living Simply get together. At the time I had no idea what they were, but followed her instructions and I ended up with a drink tasting like non-alcoholic wine with slight bubbles. Delicious!

So what is Water Kefir?

I copied this description from the website here. Water kefir grains are a great fermentation tool that help you make fruity, probiotic drinks, cultured infusions, and probiotic fruit compotes. They are versatile, inexpensive, and easy to use. They are a great introduction to home fermentation.

You need to get hold of about 3 tablespoons of water kefir grains either from a friend or you can buy online. Then you can follow the recipe below:

3 TB water kefir grains (at least, more doesn't matter as they will multiply)
1/4 cup sugar
4 cups of non-chlorinated water (chlorine kills the grains)
1 slice of lemon
1 piece of dried fruit, sulphur free (dates, prune, fig etc)
1.5 cups of Grape juice

Put the kefir grains, sugar, water, lemon and dried fruit in a glass jar, then cover with a cloth and secure with a rubber band to keep bugs out, but to allow air to get in. I am using dishcloths, then leave on the bench out of the sun to ferment for 24 hrs.

Strain water into another glass jar, leaving grains, lemon and dried fruit behind. Into the strained water add the 1.5 cups of grape juice, then put a lid on and allow to ferment on the bench for 48 hrs or more to make it carbonated. The longer it ferments the less sweet it gets and the more alcoholic it can get. You may need to open the bottle to allow some of the air out, so the bottle doesn't pop.

After it has fermented you can store in the fridge ready to drink as you like.

In the other glass jar with the strained grains, dried fruit and lemon, you can add 4 cups of water, sugar, replace lemon slice with a new piece of lemon and you can continue using the dried fruit for about a week, place cloth and rubber band and allow to ferment for 24 hrs, on your way to making your second batch of kefir.

I have only made 3 batches so far and I haven't started experimenting, but you can make many different flavours and you can vary the fermenting times depending on the air temperature and how sweet you like your kefir. Here is a blog that I find helpful http://zoevblog.com/2010/03/17/what-is-water-kefir-and-how-to-make-it/. I am looking forward to experimenting with different combinations of juices and fresh fruit in the near future.

Water kefir is meant to be great for your body due to the probiotics. I was concerned about the sugar, but from what I have read it seems that the grains eat the sugar, so you are eating minimal sugar after all of the fermentation. It is a very refreshing drink and I would definitely recommend.
Edited: Since experimenting further I am finding I like to leave the second fermentation on the bench for 48 hrs (not 24 hrs as previously stated) before putting in the fridge, then I find it tastes better after a week or two in the fridge, but can be drank at any stage, It is definitely a personal preference and you will need to experiment and find what tastes best for you.
Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12057429568641284737noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4966852678763261789.post-23099819316632010022012-04-19T09:17:00.000+09:302012-04-19T09:17:19.538+09:30Urban Farming Presentation - Michael AblemanDo you know only 1% of the population grow the food for the other 99% of us. What a huge responsibility!

Tuesday night I watched the film "Beyond Organic", which is where Michael Ableman started in growing organic vegetables for sale, before the fim he gave a presentation on his thoughts about growing vegetables, the state of the system around the world, it was very interesting and I liked a lot of his ideas.

Wednesday he gave a powerpoint presentation on high density vegetables farms he has setup in America and Canada in city environments. A few of the market gardens are completely grown in containers on asphalt and one of the markets in it's first year made $70,000 US. It really was very impressive and the gardens are giving people meaningful work and an income.

He now farms in Canada and gave us tips and hints on what is working for him. A few things that stood out from the presentation are:

-It's 40% farming, 60% marketing
-Time and space! You have to be smart with the crops you are growing, having seedlings ready to plant as soon as the crop has been harvested. Growing a fast crop with a slow crop. You also need to use everybit of space smartly.
-Michael said a market garden is possible in 1/8 - 1/4 of an acre.
-The farms that succeed are the ones where the farmer is present, observing taking notice of everything that is happening on the farm.

He is a really interesting guy with great ideas, his website is here if you would like to find out more about him - http://www.fieldsofplenty.com/

He is hoping to come back in our Summer to present a 3 day workshop on starting, setting up and running a productive and finacially viable market garden. Although it would be an overload of information I am quite interested.

It was a really great day and a chance to catch up with a few people I ran into that I hadn't seen for a while.Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12057429568641284737noreply@blogger.com0
